Abstract

The effects of subcritical quenching process on microstructure and properties of 45 steel were studied. The results show that the tensile strength, hardness and impact toughness of 45 steel increase initially and then decrease with the quenching temperature rising in the range of 760 ℃~840 ℃.When tempered above 350 ℃,45 steel has a combination of high strength and excellent toughness. The small lath-like martensite is gotten after subcritical quenching at 810 ℃,which is related with austenite grain refinement and the distribution state of ferrite. The best heat treatment process is quenching at 810 ℃ and tempering at 550 ℃,by which the excellent properties, especially the toughness can be obtained.
