Abstract
The literary truthfulness manifests itself in divergent dimensions, including objective reality, subjective reality, probable reality, and metaphysical reality. This kind of truthfulness can be divided into three categories: the first one is the truthfulness of the event itself or the representation of reality, and this category is in line with the judgment of the truthfulness to facts;the second category is the truthfulness to the ordinary and the verisimilitude in representation, and this category holds credibility as its criteria of judgment;the third one is the truthfulness to the taste and the metaphysical representation, and this last category assumes the judgment of flexibility as its standards. The truthfulness to the event(something likefact) is in contrast with fiction, requiring the writer to create life as it is;the truthfulness to the ordinary is opposed to falsehood, requiring the writer to create life as it should be;the truthfulness to the taste is contrary to hypocrisy, requiring the writer to create life of beauty. The writings based on the truthfulness to facts are documentary literature, those on credibility are realist literature, and those on flexibility are romantic literature.
