Abstract
Hydrogen gas is considered as an ideal fuel for the world.Green algae are the only known eukaryotes with both photosynthesis and hydrogen metabolism. The mechanism of photobiological hydrogen production and the recent advances in the field of green algae hydrogen production, including the approach of two-stage hydrogen production, the use of classical genetics to increase the O2 tolerance of hydrogenase, the physiological and genetic discoveries about the hydrogenase and the efficiency for the photosynthetic H2-production were summarized. The prospects of green algae hydrogen production were also discussed.
