Abstract
[Objective] To observe the effects and safety of Topiramate as adjunctive therapy for adults with refractory partial epilepsy. [Methods] TPM was adapted as adjunctive therapy in 52 cases for over 20 weeks. The efficacy was assessed by comparing the average frequency of 12 weeks before assessment to the baseline frequency before treatment, and the adverse events were recorded. [Results] The seizure in 7 cases (13.4%) was totally controlled, seizure reduction ≥75% in 14 cases (26.9%), ≥50% in 11 cases (21.2%), and 50% in 20 cases (38.5%). The effectiveness between simplex and complex partial epilepsy had no difference. There was no severe side-effects during the course of treatment. [Conclusion] TPM is a safe and effective drug for treating adult patients with refractoy partial epilepsy.
