Abstract
Endothelial progenitor cell( EPC) are bone marrow-derived cells with the potential to differentiate into mature functional endothelial cells. They are the precursors of vascular endothelial cells,also called angioblasts. EPC are mobilized in response to tissue ischemia and vascular injury,promoting the repair of endothelium and neovascularization. These cells are involved in embryonic angiogenesis and in postnatal angiogenesis,capable of protecting endothelial function,and reducing the morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that patients with coronary heart disease or heart failure may suffer from decreased amounts and impaired function of peripheral circulating EPC. Increasing evidence suggests that most cardiovascular risk factors affect the number and function of EPC.
