The Right Translation of the Word "Kuai" in the Sentence "Yeren Yu Zhi Kuai in Zuozhuan

Abstract

The word kuai(塊) in the sentence Yeren yu zhi kuai(野人与之塊) in Zuozhuan's Xigong Ershisannian(《左传·僖公二十三年》) sometimes is translated into the meaning of 土;sometimes is seen as the origin of kui(蒉),or translated into the meaning of caoqi(草器).The character's original meaning and expanding meaning of the word kuai(塊) are analyzed.It is pointed out that the relationship between kuai(塊)and kui(蒉) is not borrowing one.The translation of tu(土)is right.The word zhenkuai(枕塊) and the word zhencao(枕草) have different meanings,which cannot get confused.
