Systematic review of sertraline versus fluoxetine in treatment for depression

Abstract

AIM To study the difference in therapeutic effects and adverse reactions between sertraline and fluoxetine.METHODS The domestic control studies comparing sertraline with fluoxetine in treatment of depression from 1994 to 2009 were retrieved and a total of 6 papers were found out and subjected to a system evaluation.RESULTS There was no significant difference in clinical efficacy between sertraline group and fluoxetine group [P 0.05,OR = 1.20,95% CI(0.73-1.96)].The incidences of adverse reactions such as dry mouth and agitation in the fluoxetine group were significantly higher than those in the sertraline group(P 0.05).CONCLUSION Sertraline is as effective as fluoxetine,but it has less toxicity than fluoxetine in the treatment of depression.
