Abstract

In network-based distance education,a quasi-permanent separation between teacher and students,as well as students and students in time and space made a same quasi-permanent separation between teaching and learning. In order to ensure the quality of distance instruction, the separated teaching and learning must be artificially re-integrated.One of the most important ways of the re-integration is to establish online course forums for students to interact with teachers and with other students.Based on a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the content and number-of-students of interaction in the 20 samples of online course forums, this paper discovered that,in online interaction, the bystanders are in the majority, the academic interaction is not very high, and the non-academic interactions problematic. These phenomena demonstrate that,in the present network-based distance education, the effectiveness of teaching and learning integration allows of no optimism and many problems remain regarding to the quality of network-based distance instruction.
