The grammatical function and semantic function of Wei(no) in Zuo Zhuan(an ancient Chinese book)are illustrated,and a discussion is made of Wei's semantic usage.Wei is not only merely used to negate things in the past,but it is usually used to negate things in the past and present,to indicate wish or probability in the future.Weiis used to emphasize the various changes in an action.Wei does not mean not,but Weiindicates statc negation meaning Hai Bu(not yet)when it is followed by auxiliary verbs,static verbs or adjectives.
