Abstract
Effective damage mechanism control is essential for enhancing the seismic performance of building structures.Following a brief review of the damage mechanism of current seismic structural systems, mechanical principles and effectiveness of the damage mechanism control of rocking wall-frame structural system are studied.A practical method of estimating the stiffness demand for rocking wall is proposed and the seismic performance of rocking wall-frame structure is compared with conventional ductile frame and frame-shear wall structures, highlighting the advantages of the former.Through nonlinear dynamic analysis of a multi-story rocking wall-frame structure, the validity of the proposed method of estimating the stiffness demand for rocking wall is examined and the effectiveness of using rocking wall-frame to control the seismic damage mechanism is demonstrated.
