Abstract
Artificial simulation and contrast research methods were used to assess branch growth response to cattle grazing of Caragana microphylla naturally occurring and planted on sandy land. The results showed that C. microphylla had certain levels of compensation and overcompensation abilities with cattle grazing. Light grazing resulted in faster branch growth, increasing its edible biomass. With increase in grazing intensity, its compensation ability gradually declined. The compensation ability of artificially grown C. microphylla with quite high density was much lower than naturally occurring plants. In this paper, compensation response models for grazing of C. microphylla have been given and the compensation response mechanisms discussed.
