Total extracapsular thyroidectomy of 57 cases

Objective To investigate the clinical effects and safety of extracapsular thyroidectomy.Methods The clinical data of 57 cases undergoing the procedure were retrospectively analyzed.Results Fifty-seven patients underwent either subtotal or total thyroidectomy by extracapsular approach.The average operation time was 90 minutes, and the average volume of bleeding was 60 mL.There was no postoperative hyperthyroidism crisis or respiratory tract obstruction.Temporary injure of superior laryngeal nerve occurred in 1 case,temporary injure of recurrent laryngeal nerve in 3 cases,and temporary injure of hypoparathyroidism in 2 cases.The function of tissue with complications returned to normal after 4 months.Conclusion The total extracapsular approach for thyroidectomy is safe,effective with less complication.
