Evaluation of the Rationality of Prescriptions in the Outpatient/Emergency Departments of a Regional Medical Center in Shenzhen

OBJECTIVE:To probe into the quality of prescriptions and rational use of drugs in outpatient/emergency departments of a regional medical center in Shenzhen.METHODS:According to Prescription Administration Regulation and Instruction for Clinical Drug Use of Chinese Pharmacopeia,8 400 prescriptions of outpatient/emergency departments were collected from the hospital during Jan.～Dec.2009 to analyze the rationality of them.RESULTS:The writing of 451 prescriptions was irregular(5.4%),mainly such as missing items;unreasonable drug use was found in 314 prescriptions(3.7%),such as long medication period,medication without indication,application of antibiotics beyond demand.2.30 kinds of drugs were used per patient on average;the application rate of general names of drugs was 98.6%;the application rate of essential drugs was 87.0%;the application rate of injections was 21.6%;the application rate of antibiotics was 36.4%;the per capita drug cost was 122.21 yuan.CONCLUSION:The writing of prescription and rational use of drugs in outpatient/emergency departments of the hospital should be improved.Further interventions are necessary.
