Abstract
A numerical model of the coupling between astronomical tide and storm surge based on a 2D hydraulic model for estuary and coast(Mike 21) is confirmed to be suitable for prediction of storm surge in coastal regions of Zhejiang Province by simulation of storm surge caused by 3 strong typhoons and 2 super typhoons, that landed in the Province.Typhoon No.5612,the most intense in China since 1949,is taken as the typical super typhoon for the design of 5 typhoon routes, each landing at a different location along the coast from north to south. The storm surge process and possible maximum value along the coast are calculated by the model under the conditions of 5 designed typhoons coinciding with the spring tide when they land. The results are of practical significance for protection of coastal engineering during super typhoons.
