Abstract
Objective To evaluate ultrasound-guided catheterization of the internal jugular vein. Methods The internal jugular veins of 32 uremic patients were catherated under the guidance of two-dimensional ultrasound. Results The successful rate of ultrasound-guided catheterization was 93.5%. Twenty-eight of 32 patients were catheterted properly with once attempt, 1 of 32 patients with three attempts. Two cases were failure, and one case couldn't be cathetered because of thrombosis in the internal jugular vein. There were no complications, such as unintentional puncture of carotid artery or pneumothorax. Conclusion Ultrasound-guided catheterization of the internal jugular vein is quick, safe and effective.
