Abstract

Idiom translaton is not only the transformation between different languages but also the exchange between different cultures. The success of exchange and transformation,to a great extent, depends on the balance of assimilation and dissimilation in translation. As a result,it is greatly important to study and compare the semantic meanings between English and Chinese idioms from various angles and to understand their etymology and correspondence as well.On this basis, this paper makes a classification among the Chinese idioms conveying different cultural information which are selected from Hong Loumeng and aims to make a tentative probe into the two translation methods-assimilation and dissimilation.
