Differences and Similarities between English and Chinese Word Meanings——From the Aspect of Different Types of Word Meaning

Abstract

Differences and similarities between English and Chinese word meanings are studied systematically in this paper by analyzing different types of word meaning.It is pointed out that denotative meanings of English and Chinese words have more similarities;their associative meanings have more differences;grammatical meanings of their functional words have more similarities;and grammatical meanings of their lexical words have more differences.The present study is helpful for the further study of word meaning,and exerts great influence on translation,English teaching and cross-cultural studies.
