Abstract

Objective:To determine whether diabetes had an effect on renal antioxidant defense function. Methods: The levels of malondialdehyde(MDA), glutathione(GSH), and the activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-PX), and catalase(CAT) were investigated in the renal cortex of diabetic rats at week12. Results:The activities of SOD and CAT were significantly lower in the diabetic group than normal one. The level of GSH was decreased too, MDA showed no change, whereas GSH-PX activity of the diabetic group was increased. Conclusion:The antioxidant defense function in the kidney of diabetic rats decreased significantly suggesting an obvious effect of diabetes on the defense function.
