Abstract
Objective:To study the effect of diabetes on renal antioxidant defense function. Methods:The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and the activities of antioxidant enzymes viz., [superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH PX), glutathione s transferase (GSH ST) and catalase (CAT)] were investigated in the renal cortex of diabetic rats at 12th week. Results:The activities of SOD, GSH-ST and CAT were significantly lower in the diabetic group than normal one. The level of GSH was decreased too, MDA showed no change, whereas GSH PX activity of the diabetic group was theincreased. Conclusion:The antioxidant defense function in the kidney of diabetic rats decreased obviously.
