Breeding of Mianjiang No.8, a New Early-mid Maturing Cowpea Cultivar

Mianjiang No.8 is a new cowpea hybrid developed by crossing Hongzuiyan as female parent with Cuipiroujiang as male parent after system selection. It is of early-mid maturity. It is vigorous. The fruit mainly set on main stem. The time from sowing to the first harvest is 68 days in spring.The commercial fruit is light green and its length is about 56 cm,single fruit weight is about 17 g, the flesh is thick, it has excellent quality and good commodity. The yield of tender fruit is about 2 200 kg/667 m2 in spring. And it has good suitability and strong resistance to disease, so it is suitable for cultivation in spring and autumn.
