Family Environment and Rearing Styles of Parents of Children with Tourette Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Objective:To explore the feature of family environment and rearing styles of parents of children with Tourette syndrome(TS) and obsessive compulsive disorder(OCD).Methods:33 TS+OCD children , 40 pure TS children and 40 normal controls (criteria of DSM-IV) were collected.The instruments included Family Environment Scale-Chinese Version(FES-CV) and the Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran (EMBU) of Chinese Version. Results:Compared with pure TS group and normal controls group, the scores of cohesion and emotion expression of the TS and OCD group were lower (5.7±1.4/7.1±1.4, 7.6±1.2, P0.05), while the scores of conflict and control of the comorbidity group were higher than the other two groups (4.2±1.2/2.8±1.0, 1.4±1.0,P0.05; 4.8±1.7/4.1±1.4, 3.5±1.2,P0.05). The score of being cared was lower(43.2±7.3/49.2±8.9, F=5.81,P=0.004)while the score of being refused was higher(10.4±2.5/5.6±3.0,F=6.21,P=0.003)in TS and OCD father-group when compared with that of normal controls group, however the scores of factors of being punished and protection, and of interference (18.9±4.3,21.9±3.3)were higher than the other two groups (17.1±4.2, 20.1±3.2, 11.4±3.0; 16.2±5.2, 18.7±3.9, 10.1±2.6). Compared with the other two groups, the scores of being refused and over protection or interference of mothers in comorbity group were higher. There was significant difference in scores of being punished of mothers between the comorbidity group and normal controls group(F =3.37,P=0.038),but there was no difference between two case groups.Conclusion: Children with TS and OCD suffered from unhealthy family environment and bad rearing styles of parents.
