Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between the level of homocysteine(Hcy) and carotid artery atherosclerosis in patients with H-type hypertension. Methods 107 patients with essential hypertension were devided into 2 groups: the study group(n=54),which with hyperhomocysteinemia, and the control group(n=52).The arotid artery examination was performed by the colour Doppler ultrasonography technique for all patients to detect the carotid intima-media thickness(IMT).The serum 1evels of Hcy,total cholesterols(TC),low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),triglycerides(TG) as well asserum uric acid(SUA) were detected. Results The IMT is higher in the study group than the control group. When the serum Hcy is higher, the IMT is thicker. The level of Hcy is increased with the increase in carotid artery atherosclerosis severity. Conclusion The level of Hcy is associated with hyperhomocysteinemia.
