Effects of "Fuzheng Jiedu Decoction" on Quality of Life of Patients with Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

Objective: To assess the effect of Fuzheng Jiedu Decoction on quality of life(QOL) of patients with non-small cell lung cancer. Methods: Sixty patients with non-small cell lung cancer were randomly divided into three groups: TCM group, TCM combined with chemotherapy group, and chemotherapy group. Patients in TCM group were treated with Fuzheng Jiedu Decoction , patients in chemotherapy group were treated with chemotherapy, and those in TCM combined with chemotherapy group were treated with Fuzheng Jiedu Decoction plus chemotherapy. Karnovsky performance status(KPS) and EORTC QLQ-C30 were used to assess the quality of life of these patients. Results: The rate of improvement and stability in KPS was 90% for patients in TCM group, as compared with 75% for those in chemotherapy group, P0.01. In TCM group, the scores of the functions of body, role, emotion, and the symptoms of fatigue, pain, dyspnea, loss of appetite and disorder of stool all descended after treatment, P0.05, and the score of total health significantly increased, P0.01. In TCM combined with chemotherapy group, the score of the function of emotion significantly declined, but the scores of fatigue and vomiting as well as the cost of the treatment significantly increased. In chemotherapy group and TCM combined with chemotherapy group, the scores of nausea and vomiting increased after treatment, P0.01.In chemotherapy group, the scores of the functions of body, role, the symptoms of fatigue and vomiting significantly increased after treatment. Conclusion: Fuzheng Jiedu Decoction can improve the quality of life of non-small cell lung cancer patient.
