Abstract

We summarize the advances in river research of Yangtze River since 1950,including the features of incoming sediment, the characteristics of river evolution in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, the main experiences in river regulation and the research results concerned. It is pointed out that, the suspended sediment in the upper reach of the river comes from Jinsha River and Jialing river, accounting for 50.9% and 24% respectively at Yichang station;the river evolution in the middle and lower reaches is influenced by natural and human factors, and the later becomes increasingly serious;it is the base and necessary conditions of river regulation to strengthen observation and analysis of river evolution and understand the laws of river evolution;the plan and design of river regulation works shall be combined with river evolution observation, river model test and mathematical model calculation.
