Abstract
Ionic liquids have emerged as novel nonaqueous solvents for biocatalysis. They may take place of conventional organic solvents because of their distinctive features and be used in organic chemistry,food-stuff industry, new energy and other fields. In this paper, the applications of ionic liquids in whole-cell biocatalysis are introduced. The applications for organic synthesis, biodiesel fuel production and in situ fermentation extraction are highlighted. The problems faced by the applications of ionic liquids in whole-cell biocatalysis are discussed in the end.
