Abstract
Ionic liquids have emerged as novel nonaqueous solvents and drawn much attention as new reaction media for biocatalysis.Due to their special properties, ionic liquids may replace the position of normal organic solvents in biocatalysis. In this review, the solvent properties and applied modes of ionic liquids are discussed, the theories of their effects on catalytic performances of enzymes and whole cells are investigated.
