Abstract

OBJECTIVE:To detect the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 in astrocytic tumours and analyze the relationship between it and pathology classification of astrocytic tumours.METHODS:Immunohistochemistry technique was adopted to examine the levels of expression of cyclooxygenase-2 protein in astrocytic tumours tissues and non-tumor tissues and the system of image analysis was adopted to detect the results.RESULTS:The positive rates of cyclooxygenase-2 protein in each group were:non-tumor tissues 28.6%(2/7),astrocytic tumours 80.0%(36/45),pilocytic astrocytoma 60.0%(6/10),diffuse astrocytoma 76.9%(10/13),anaplastic astrocytoma 90.0%(9/10),glioblastoma 91.7%(11/12);the expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 protein in each group by immunohistochemical staining(IODA)were:non-tumor tissues(2.18±0.94),astrocytic tumours(6.38±3.68),pilocytic astrocytoma(3.54±1.29),diffuse astrocytoma(5.58±2.78),anaplastic astrocytoma(6.88±2.70),glioblastoma(9.19±4.62).The expression of cyclooxygenase-2 in astrocytic tumours was significantly highter than that in non-tumor tissues(P=0.017).CONCLUSIONS:The over-expression of cyclooxygenase-2 has a close relation with the occurrence of astrocytic tumors. In biology and morphology, the change of gene of pilocytic astrocytoma is different from other astrocytic tumours. The change of expression of cyclooxygenase-2 provides a new way for clinical diagnosis, treatment and prognosis judgment of astrocytic tumours.
