Abstract
The key technologies and theoretical basis for drilling oil and gas are discussed. The multi-discipline fields for drilling technology such as mechanics, chemistry, geology, materials, mechanical and control engineering are involved. The developing trend and inherent drive force for rotary drilling are pointed out. The merits of down-hole motor drilling in both rotary and sliding modes are described. Some important drilling technologies in the 21st century, including high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) drilling, deep or ultra-deep drilling, special drilling, steering and visualizing drilling in three-dimension space are elaborated.
