Abstract

This paper intends to uphold the works of Gong Zizhen contains some seeds of the later new literature of May 4th Movement. It begins from an analysis of the main feature of the new literature—“self-discovery”, and examines the common feature shared in Gong's thoughts. Then it continues with a comparison between Gong's Bing mei guan ji and Yu Pingbo's Gardener, revealing their similarity in defying the restrain of individuality. And also it highlights the tragic and unrelenting pursuit of independent personality in Gong's works, and compares it with that in Lu Xun's works. Finally, it examines the new factors in Gong's love lyrics.
