Abstract

The combined process of powdered activated carbon (PAC) and ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was used to treat source water from Yellow River. The results show that UF membrane is far superior to filter in turbidity and algae removal. The turbidity in the membrane permeate is consistently reduced to below 0.1 NTU,and the removal rate of chlorophyll-a is 92%.Bacteria and total coliform are not detected in the membrane permeate. The removal efficiencies of dissolved organic matters by UF membrane is poor, the removal rates of CODMn and TOC are all only 23%,and the value of UV254 does not decrease after ultrafiltration. The addition of PAC compensates for this defect in UF membrane. The average removal rates of CODMn,TOC and UV254 increase to 45%,71% and 42% respectively, and the THMFP decreases greatly. It is concluded that the combined process of PAC and ultrafiltration can effectively remove contaminants from water and enhance the safety of drinking water.
