The Effects of Irbesartan and Enalapril in Patients with Essential Hypertension

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of irbesartan and compare with that of Enalapril in patients from mild to moderate essential hypertension.Methods Patients were randomly assigned to Irbesartan group(n=41),150mg to 300mg/d,or Enalapril group(n=42) 10mg to 20mg/d for 4 and 8 weeks.Results The systolic blood pressure(SBP)and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) decreased significantly in both groups after 2 weeks(P0.01);BP decreased smoothly and continuously during the entire treatment period;The total efficacy rate for decreased DBP after 4 and 8 weeks treatment of Irbesartan were 90.2 %(37/41) and 95.1%(39/41) respectively,that of Enalapril group were 83.3% (35/42)and 90.5% (38/42) respectively,and the difference between 2 group is significant(P0.05).Conclusion Irbesartan is a safe,effective,long acting anti-hypertension drug,tolerable and light side-effect.
