Abstract
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor-C(VEGF-C)and non-metastasis(nm23)in thyroid cancer tissues and their relationship, and explore their clinical value.METHODS:The paraffin-embedded tissue sections of 63 thyroid cancer patients,10 cases of multinodular goiter and 10 cases from the peritumor tissue were immunohistochemically examined for the expressions of VEGF-C and nm23.The association between VEGF-C and nm23 expressions and clinicopathological parameters were analysised.RESULTS:The positive rate of VEGF-C in thyroid cancer tissues was significantly higher than those in multinodular goiter and peritumor tissues,P0.01.The positive expression of VEGF-C was correlated significantly with the lymph node metastasis,P0.01.The positive rate of nm23 in thyroid cancer tissues was correlated significantly with age, lymph node metastasis and clinical stage,P0.05.A significant reverse correlation was found between the expressions of VEGF-C and nm23 in thyroid cancer,r=-0.592,P0.01.Furthermore,the rate of lymph node metastasis in thyroid cancer of VEGF-C positive with nm23 negative was significantly higher than that in VEGF-C negative with nm23 positive,P0.01.CONCLUSIONS:The VEGF-C is overexpressed in thyroid cancer tissues, and associated with metastasis and invasion of thyroid cancer.A significant negative correlation is found in thyroid cancer between the expression of nm23 and capability of metastasis and invasion. There is a significant reverse correlations between the expression of VEGF-C and nm23 in thyroid cancer.VEGF-C and nm23 are beneficial to diagnosis of cervical lymph node metastases in thyroid cancer.
