Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To detect the concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in plasma of patients with early, intermediate and advanced esophageal cancer, and to explore the relationship between the expression of VEGF and the occurrence and development of esophageal cancer.METHODS:The concentration of VEGF in plasma was detected by ELISA in 90 patients with esophageal cancer in different periods and 28 normal persons.RESULTS: The concentration of VEGF in the patients with esophageal cancer was higher than that in the normal control group. The concentration of VEGF in 26 patients with early esophageal cancer was higher than that in normal control group, but no statistical significance was found,P0.05.In 34 patients with intermediated esophageal cancer, the VEGF concentration was(498.21 ± 237.80) pg/mL,and compared with the VEGF concertration in the normal control group(231.65±95.70) pg/mL,a significant difference was found,P0.05.In 30 patients with advanced esophageal cancer, the VEGF concentration was(599.54±257.1) pg/mL,and compared with the normal group,a high significant difference was found P0.01.The concertration of VEGF in the patients with early esophageal cancer was significantly different from that in the patients with intermediate and advanved esophageal cancer,P0.05.CONCLUSIONS: The concentration of VEGF is higher in patients with esophageal caner than that in the normal persons. The more advanced, the higher of the VEGF concentrtion.VEGF is a valuable index for deteming the occurrence, develophment and progosis of esophageal cancer.
