Abstract

Objective To investigate the changes in serum level of adiponectin and its relationship with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods Levels of fasting blood glucose, insulin and serum adiponectin were measured in 76 cases of type 2 diabetes(including 42 obese patients and 34 non-obese patients) and 30 normal controls. Results Compared with normal controls,non-obese patients with type 2 diabetes presented with similar body mass index(BMI) but significantly higher HOMA-IR and lower level of serum adiponectin. All of BMI,HOMA-IR and serum adiponectin in obese patients with type 2 diabetes differed statistically from those in normal controls and non-obese patients. Conclusion The decreasing level of fasting serum adiponectin found in type 2 diabetes correlates with increasing severity of insulin resistance.Lowered serum adiponectin may play an important role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
