Abstract
Taking the two English versions of Xiao Hong's prose Yongyuandechongjingyuzhuiqiu as the example,this paper discusses the literal and free translation in the two versions with the basic knowledge of semiotics.Through the analysis of the two versions and the discussion of the relation of signifier and signified,it believes that the choice of literal or free translation depends on the relations of the language symbols.When the source language and target language have the same of similar symbolic relations,the literal translation can be adopted,and vice verse.
