Abstract
Objective To study the role and relationship of Ki-67 in pterygia and to evaluate the clinical significance. Methods Cryopreserved tissue specimens consisting of normal conjunctiva and pterygium were used to study the expression of Ki-67,using SP immunohistochemistry. The relationship between the expression and clinical pathological parameters were also analyzed. Results The positive rate of Ki-67 was 10% in 10 cases of normal tissues and 72% in 50 cases of pterygia, namely 36,the diference between them had markedly statistical significance(P0.05).The staining intensity of Ki-67 in pterygia was significantly associated with the clinicopathologic stage and recurrence P0.05).Conclusion The higher expression of Ki-67 in the epithelium of the pterygium may indicate abnormal regulation of proliferation. The epithelium has acquired transformation and may play an important role in the development of pterygium.
