Anatomy of the reproductive system of Pieris melete Ménétriès(Lepidoptera:Pieridae)

【Objective】 The anatomical structure of the reproductive system of Pieris melete Menetries(Lepidoptera:Pieridae) is studied and illustrated in this paper,aiming at providing more useful information for taxonomy and phylogeny of Pieris Schrank even Pierini.【Method】 Examined specimens were collected in Zhejiang Linan and Shaanxi Qinling in 2009-2010 summer,which were dissected by the stereomicroscope of MODEL SZX2-ILLK and photographed by the QImaging Retiga 2000R(CCD),then described and illustrated.【Result】 The male internal reproductive organ is composed of testis,vasa deferentia,seminal vesicle,accessory glands and ductus ejaculatorius.The male external genitalia consisted of aedeagus,vinculum and clasper.The female internal reproductive organ is composed of a pair of ovaries,lateral oviducts,common oviduct,spermatheca and accessory glands.The female genitalia include bursa copulatrix and associated parts,ductus seminalis,apophyses and papillae anales.【Conclusion】 The ovary is unsymmetrical:4 ovarioles jointed directly on one side,while on the other side,the two adjacent ovarioles linked separately,and these two connected with the lateral oviduct.
