Abstract
From the late Qing Dynasty to Tang and Song Dynasty the word was mainly used as an adjective. Since the middle ancient times, is used as the word ruthless. After Yuan and Ming dynasty, in the structure of the very / + the position of and become unbalanced gradually. Semantically in the structure very / + the adjective was the head and very / ruthless got modify meaning. Grammatically the adjective was mostly used as predicate and the words very/ruthless were used as adverbial. In Qing dynasty, the use of very/ruthless as adverbs of degree had been much more than that as adjectives. Hereafter very/ruthless were showed respectively with and again, and is used as an adjective and an adverb of degree. In modern contemporary Chinese the adverb of degree is further weakened as an adverb indicating mood.
