Abstract

Objective To introduce a new experimental model for treatment of root avulsion of brachial plexus in rats. Methdos Twenty adult female Wistar rats were divided into two groups. In group one C3 and C4 nerve roots were used to repair C5 and C6. In group two right brachial plexus are thoroughly cut and removed. The electromyologram of two sides' biceps brachii in each group were detected and histological studies (H-E staining) of musculocutaneous nerve were carried out after their sacrifice. Results Three months postoperatively there were a few myelinated fibers to regenating into the repaired roots, and biceps brachii was atropic lightly in the experimental group. And in the denervated rats, nerve fibers degeneration, collapse absorption and myatrophy were apparent. Conclusion The new experimental animal was reasonable to study root avulsion of brachial plexus.
