Abstract
Objective:To study the anti viral effect of rhub arb ethanol extract on Newcastle disease virus(NDV) in vitro. Methods:Cell culture was utilized to investi gate the anti NDV effect of rhubarb ethanol extract, including its cytoto xity, inhibition of cytopathic effect, prevention of NDV infection and the effe ct on dynamics of viral replication. Results:The extract demonstrated very low cytotoxicity, there being no cytotoxicity at all at the concent ration of 20g/L. Its inhibition effect on CPE caused by NDV was obvious at the dose of 0.5g/L, but weaker than on HSV 1. However, its direct effect on virus particles was stronger than on HSV 1.The extract could also pr e vent NDV infection and had marked effect on dynamics of replication.Conclu sion: Rhubarb eth anol extract can obviously inhibit NDV infection and has broad spectrum anti v iral effect. Therefore, rhubarb is an ideal a ntiviral drug with a very good clinical prospects.
