Polysemy Acquisition Based on the Cognitive Mechanism of Metaphor and Metonymy

Polysemy has been a big problem in language study.The development of cognitive linguistics provides a new theoretical basis for the acquisition of polysemous words.According to cognitive linguistics,senses of polysemy are mainly extended through two mechanisms:one is metaphor based on similarity,and the other is metonymy based on contiguity.Therefore,it is effective to improve students' capability of polysemy acquisition by explaining the internal cognitive connections between different senses of polysemy and putting forward corresponding learning strategies.
