Abstract

Objective To invesligale a new diagnostic index for the prognosis of bladder transitional cell cancer. Methods Expression of vascular endolhelial cell growth factor (VEGF)in 68 cases of primary transitional cell carcinoma(TCC)and 10 cases of normal bladder tissue surrouding neoplasms were assayed using immunohistochemical technique (S-P method),and their relation to the pathological grading, clinical stages and prognosis were analyzed. Results All normal bladder tissues showed negative staining while the rate of expression of VEGF in neoplastic tissues was 45.6%(31/68).The positive rale of VEGF expression in poorly differentiated and invasive bladder tumors were higher than those of well differentiated and superficial tumors(P0.01).The expression of VEGF in carcinoma tissue showed positive relationship with tumor vascular invasion (P0.01),and have relationship with lymph node metastasis (P 0.001). The 5-year survival time(39.3%) of patients with expression of VEGF was significantly lower than that (93.7%) of patients without expression of VEGF (P0.05).Conclusion Expression of VEGF has important influence on the biological behavior of bladder carcinoma, and expression of VEGF may aid predicting the prognosis of bladder transitional cell cancer.
