Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between type Ⅳ collagen and degeneration of human lumbar intervertebral discs. Methods Expression and changes of type Ⅳ collagen were observed in 126 slices of 23 human lumbar intervertebral discs by LAB immunohistochemical analysis with McAb. The relationship between the expression of type Ⅳ collagen and the degeneration of human lumbar intervertebral discs was investigated together with the morphological changes. Results Type Ⅳ collagen was only expressed in the intervertebral discs of young adults. Degenerative microcracks appeared from young adults. Conclusion Type Ⅳ collagen participates in the early cellular reaction and is a biomarker of early degeneration of human lumbar intervertebral discs.
