Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of type-Ⅳ collagen and its relationship with degeneration of intervertebral disc. Methods The expressions of type-Ⅳ collagen in frozen sections of the discs collected from an operation for degenerative lesion and different age-group subjects were analyzed by using LAB immunohistochemical technology. Results Collagen type Ⅳ presented only in the discs of adolescents, which surrounded mainly the chondrocyte-like cells of the nucleus pulposus. The proportion of positively stained cells increased significantly with age. No positive reaction signals were found in age other groups. (Conclusion Type)-Ⅳ collagen occurs in the disc of adolescents is an early cellular reaction to harmful stimulation, which can be served as a biomarker of early degeneration of human lumbar intervertebral discs.
