Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of chronic arsenic poisoning on astrocytes in the hippocampal CA1 area and to investigate the neurotoxicity of chronic arsenic poisoning in adult rats. Methods Totally 60 healthy adult Kunming mice were divided into chronic arsenic poisoning group and control group.1/10 LD50 As2O3 was given for 3 months by digestive tract(4.5 mg·kg-1·d-1) in chronic arsenic poisoning group while equal amont of distilled water was given in control group. The abilities of learning and memorizing were tested by Y-maze.The glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP)-positive cells in the hippocampal CA1 area were quantitatively analyzed with cell morphometric technique. Results Compared with control group, the changes in chronic arsenic poisoning group were: the ability of learning and memorizing were significantly lower than those in control group(P0.05);the numbers and average optical density of GFAP-positive cells in the hippocampal CA1 area were increased than those of control group(P0.05).Conclusion Chronic arsenic poisoning can increase the number of astrocyte in the hippocampal CA1 area.
