Interpreting the Vicissitude in the Miao Marriage with a Focus on "Gift": Taking L Village in Sansui as a Case for Study

This article analyzes the change of Miao in L Village since the 1950's.The analysis focuses on marriage present.With the presence of giving,mobility,change and symbolic significance of the presents for the marriage,this paper explores the change of custom in that area.The paper describes not only the gifts given between bridegroom and bride in different periods,but also the presents given between their families for good wishes.In human society,the presenting of gifts for is one of the most important ways for social communication.The study of gift exchange provides a way to understand and interpret the different customs and structure of social relationship.Through the study of the changes of gifts for in different periods and different sections of space,we can find the changes of the culture of the Miao people under the situation of social transformation.
