Abstract

Mobile multi-protocol label switching(MPLS) is a scheme that integrates mobile IP and MPLS protocols to support mobility of MPLS.But it only fits macro-mobility and fails to support micro-mobility efficiently.Micro-cell implementation increases the handoff rate of the mobile hosts dramatically. Thus,in such environment,MPLS based on normal mobile IP is no longer an efficient solution.A hierarchical mobile MPLS(H-MPLS) approach was proposed to overcome the limitations of the mobile MPLS protocol.By using this hierarchical mobile MPLS,the delay of the mobile hosts during handoff periods is considerably reduced. This paper introduces another practical approach to extend the use of MPLS in micro mobility environment: micro cell mobile MPLS(MM-MPLS),which is an incorporation of MPLS forwarding, localized signaling and soft-state location management scheme.Compared with H-MPLS,more handoff latency of the mobile host could be reduced.
