Abstract

The 35CrMoA steel connecting-rod bolt used on the coiler mandrel of hot-rolling plant were fractured during operation.The chemical composition,hardness,mechanical properties of the bolt were analyzed with optical metallography,SEM and EDAX.The results show that the fracture reason is belong to rotary bending fatigue failure,and the surface defects on the thread root of the bolt cause the stress concentration that becomes the initiation source of fatigue crack.Furthermore,the lower strength of the bolt material as well as more banded MnS inclusion accelerate the propagation of fatigue crack causing the instant fracture.
