Efficacy of nasogastric feeding with glucose in normal saline to relieve stomach discomfort after orthognathic surgery

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of nasogastric feeding with 5% glucose in normal saline to relieve stomach discomfort after orthognathic surgery.Method Totally 120 patients after orthognathic surgery were divided into two groups.In the experimental group,5% glucose in normal saline was used to irrigate the stomach by nasogastric tube on the first day after surgery.The symptoms of stomach discomfort and the times of vomiting after the first ingestion and in three days after surgery were recorded.Result The times of vomiting in the experimental group was significantly fewer than that of the control group(P0.01).Conclusion The use of 5% glucose in normal saline irrigation by nasogastric tube can relieve stomach discomfort in patients after orthognathic surgery.
