Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effects of fluoride and fluoride plus calcium on serum lipid peroxide in ovariectomized rats. Methods Sixty|four female Wister rats, three months old, were divided randomly into sham|operated group(sham),ovariectomized group(OVX),ovariectomized and fed with fluoride group(OVXF),and ovariectomized and fed with fluoirde plus calcium group(OVXFCa).OVXF group was given flourid-added water after ovariectomiy once every other day, the fluorine ion contents in water being 2mg,4mg and 6mg per liter. The OVXFCa group was given fluoride in the same way as for the OVX group, with addition of calcium gluconate, simultaneously the calcium ion content in water being 900mg per liter. After six months of feeding, all animals were killed, and their serum LPO was assayed. Results There was a significant increase in serum LPO (nmol/l)in OVX group as compared with the sham group( P 0 05).The serum LPO in OVXF and OVXFCa groups was significantly lower than that in OVX group( P0^01 ),but there was no signiticant difference between OVXF group and OVXFCa group in serum LPO ( P 0^05). Conclusion Serum LPO in ovariectomized osteoporotic rats increases significantly, and the degree of lipid peroxidation in ovariectomized rats can be improved after administration of different doses of fluoride and fluoride plus calcium.
